| General information >> Race Rules >> Download Instructions Instructions for Junior participants The event is
called a TRIathlon because it involves doing three sports one after another. The
three sports are always the same and are always done in the same order;
swimming, cycling then running. At the Cricklade
Triathlon you will have to swim for 7 minutes, then cycle and run for 10 minutes
each. Sounds easy? It’s harder than you think! The whole event
takes place at the Leisure Centre. The pool will be divided into lanes and the
cycling and running courses will be marked out with red and white tape on the
football fields. You will swim as many lengths as you can within the time limit,
get changed quickly (although this is not timed you will have about 3 mins) then cycle as many laps as you
can around one football pitch and run up and down the length of the other pitch
as many times as you can both within the time limits.
You will be
divided by age into groups of seven. Your group will be given a "heat"
number and will stay in your heat for all three
stages. The youngest children will go in the first heats.
To stop anyone getting hurt by slipping over in the pool, crashing
on their bike or tripping over when running there are some rules you must
follow. You won’t need to remember them all because the people in charge, the
marshals, will remind you about them on the day.
Get there early and, follow the signs to the registration desk where you
will be given your race number to pin on the back of your shirt and have the same number written on your left arm and leg. You will be shown to the bike parking area where a marshal will tell
you where to put it after checking it is
safe to ride. Leave your helmet and drinks with your bike.
Once everyone has
parked their bikes another marshal will make an announcement, using a “loud
haler”, calling your heat together for a short talk. He or she will
check you know what to do and that you understand the rules. When the talk
is finished the marshal will tell you to have a drink and will send everyone in your heat to the
changing rooms where you will get changed into your swimming kit, put your
clothes in a bag and take them with you into the pool hall. You
will be shown where to sit while you wait for your turn to swim.
When it is your
turn your heat will be called to the shallow end of the pool where the marshal
counting your lengths will check your name. You will put your goggles on before
getting into the pool and the marshal will tell you when to start swimming.
You can use any
stroke you like and you are allowed to change strokes or stop for a rest
whenever you need. The marshal will tell you when it is time to stop.
At the end of the
swim you must get out of the pool at the shallow end and take off your goggles
before collecting your bag. You will then walk to the changing rooms and get dried and changed quickly, put your wet swimming kit in the
bag and take it with you to the bike park.
The cycling
marshal will tell you to have a drink, put your helmet on, collect your bike and
wheel it to the start of the cycling course. When everyone is ready the marshal
will tell you to start cycling. You must keep your distance from other riders
and only pass them on their right hand side (you will be cycling anti
clockwise). The marshal will tell you when it is time to stop. At the end of the
cycling stage you will wheel your bike back into the bike park and leave it in
the same space that you collected it from along with your helmet. Collect your
drink then go straight to the run course and wait until the marshal tells you to
start. Keep
your distance from other runners and only pass them on their right hand side
(you will be running anti clockwise). The marshal will tell you when it is time
to stop and collect your medal.
