Race Safety

Each parent/guardian is responsible for the safety of their child. These "common sense" guidelines should be followed:

ensure your child's bike is roadworthy and suitable for riding on grass. Bikes will be checked by a marshal to ensure that they are in a safe condition

tell us if your child has any medical conditions or are taking any medication

let us know about any friends they would like to be grouped with

make a checklist of things that your child will need on race day (example below)

On the morning of the race …

assess your child's health. Withdraw if he/she is injured or feels unwell!

plan their meals so they don't eat too early or late and eat nothing after the safely talk

check the weather forecast. Sun protetion and extra drinks may be required

Race Rules

Guardians must ensure that Juniors observe the following rules:

Ensure your child is registered before their safety talk

The responsible adult must be present and supervise before, during and after the race and be at hand with any medication (inhalers etc)

Attend the safety talk

Children will change themselves in the leisure centre changing rooms before and after swimming. (Adults are discouraged from entering the changing areas for the duration of the triathlon) Ensure your child knows and will follow the "pool rules" and any instructions given by the pool lifeguards. Failure to do so will result in disqualification. Diving into the pool is prohibited.

Juniors must not remove their helmet until they have put their bikes back in the parking area. Failure to do so will result in disqualification. (Triathlon rules).

Bikes must only be ridden in the designated course within the Leisure Centre grounds and must be removed at the end of the Junior event.

Advice for Parents or Guardians on the use of Goggles

Risks associated with wearing of goggles …

goggles can be a hazard and cause permanent eye injury. Wet plastic is very slippery and frequent, incorrect or unnecessary adjustment or removal of them, by pulling them away from the eyes, can lead to them slipping from the child's grasp with the hard plastic lenses causing severe injury.

children who misuse goggles in this way are a health and safety risk to themselves

it is the responsibility of the supervising adult to ensure that such misuse does not occur

also, in crowded water space there is an increased likelihood of accidental collision that may lead to eye injury by those wearing goggles.

hospital records substantiate these causes of eye injury

Use of goggles during the Cricklade Triathlon …

as the majority of Junior participants prefer to use goggles and many frequently wear them during swimming lessons, the organisers sanctionuse of swimming goggles subject to parental approval. Ppool marshals and lifeguards reserve the right to remove them if the child constantly adjusts or removes and replaces the goggles.

Type of and condition of goggles …

lenses must be shatterproof

goggles with poor seals should be thrown away and not applied more tightly

hypo-allergenic seals, low-elasticity straps, flexible one-piece frames and anti-fog lenses are recommended (Most reputable makes conform to these standards)

Correct fitting, adjustment and removal …

FITTING: While holding the elastic head strap either side of the lenses, place the nose bridge strap gently onto the bridge of the nose. Slide both hands towards the back of the head drawing the elastic from the front to back of head.

ADJUSTING: Adjust head strap whilst wearing the goggles by gently pulling on the band until a comfortable fit is obtained. Adjust nose bridge strap whilst not wearing the goggles until a correct fit is obtained.

REMOVING: Put thumbs under the head strap at the sides of the head, slide thumbs to back of the head and lift elastic from back to front of head. Never pull eye cups away from face as they may spring back and cause eye damage.

CARE: Rinse the goggles in clean water after each use. Dry naturally and store out of direct sunlight.

Conditions of use …

check the condition and fitting of your child's goggles before the event

your child must attend the pre-race safety talk where correct fitting and removal of goggles will be demonstrated

you must be satisfied your child can demonstrate their safe fitting and removal

they must be fitted immediately prior to the heat and removed immediately afterwards
